Generic Instructor Course (GIC)

Generic Instructor Course (GIC) is designed to train future instructors in the principles of adult education. This course is a joint project of the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) and the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG), and it is also standardized and certified by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC).

Generic Instructor Course (GIC)

Course Objectives and Structure

The GIC aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:

  • Understand the four domains of learning.
  • Deliver various types of teaching sessions on provider courses.
  • Develop skills for teaching and facilitating learning in small groups.
  • Conduct cardiac arrest simulations and provide constructive feedback.

The course consists of one day of e-learning, followed by two days of face-to-face practical sessions. The e-learning component covers essential theoretical modules that participants must complete before attending the practical part of the course.

Practical Course Component

During the two days of practical sessions, participants will attend lectures and engage in practical sessions covering:

  • Teaching methods for skills.
  • Facilitating simulations.
  • Conducting assessments and providing feedback.
Application Process and Certification

The GIC is not open for general applications like other courses. Candidates are identified during their attendance at provider courses (e.g., ALS, EPALS, ILS) and are recommended as potential instructors (Instructor Potential - IP) by the faculty. Following this, candidates receive an invitation to apply for the GIC.

After successfully completing the GIC, candidates must teach on two provider courses as Instructor Candidates (IC) within two years to achieve full instructor certification.

Benefits and Continuing Education

Participants who successfully complete the GIC receive a certificate recognized across Europe. They also gain complimentary associate membership in the Resuscitation Council UK, which offers various benefits.1.

The GIC is crucial for ensuring a high standard in instructor education, enabling them to effectively teach and transfer the knowledge and skills necessary for saving lives.
